Famous Alumni

Dennis Stewart Class of 1966

Dennis Stewart received the honor of All American while running for the Kansas University Track Team. He was inducted into the University of Kansas Athletic Hall of Fame in 1978 for the role he played in helping the track team win the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in 1970. Dennis was the leadoff runner in the two mile relay which his team won with a new indoor world record time of 7:25.7. This record stood for 12 years and was not broken until the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships were moved into larger venues. The original record still stands today (nearly 50 years later) for the small size track it was run on, which was only 11 laps to a mile. Dennis was also selected as the Most Outstanding Long Distance Runner in the Missouri Valley AAU in 1973. Although not nearly as fast as he used to be, Dennis won his first world championship in the Huntsman World Senior Games held in St. George, Utah this year (2019). Dennis won the 70-74 age division in the 800 meter and beat the second place runner by 17 seconds. Dennis's time was the 8th fastest 70 and over 800 meter time run in the U.S. for 2019 and the 32nd fastest 70 and over 800 meter time run in the world in 2019. In a completely different area, Dennis was the 33rd individual to climb the highest point in each of the lower 48 contiguous states and the 100th person to climb each of the highest points in all 50 states. In July of 1991 Dennis formed a team of 4 other climbers and set the first official world record for climbing the highest point in each of the lower 48 contiguous states in the fastest time. They completed their marathon speed record in one calendar month with a time of 30 days, 10 hours and 52 minutes and all 5 members of the team reached the top of all 48 state highpoints. For their accomplishment the team received recognition in Guinness Book of Records from 1992-1994. Presently Dennis is the first and only individual who has climbed the highest point in each of the lower 48 contiguous states three times. Even at 70 years old, Dennis continues to work on a goal of climbing the 10 highest named points in each state. He knows he will not complete this goal before he meets his Maker, but he has finished 15 states so far and he is still going strong. Recently, Dennis has authored his first book titled "23 Nights working for the U.S. Treasury Department," which details his experience working temporarily for the Internal Revenue Service and the incredible dysfunctional operation of that national revenue collection agency. His book is available from Amazon.
